Gon Method for Windows XP Step 2

Step 2

"Step 1" was just for reading/viewing Japanese homepage. As for writing Japanese (or installing Japanese Application), we need to start "Step 2".

Go to Regional and Language Options window.
Click Advanced tab.

At Language for non-Unicode programs area, change English (United States) into Japanese.

Windows XP asks you "Is it OK?" because it wants to skip copying language files, which you've already installed in Step 1. Click Yes button.

Windows XP asks you to restart your PC. Click Yes button.

After PC restarts, Language bar will appear. Language bar is new function of Windows XP. It's like a control center for IME.

Click EN mark to switch to JP mark.

Global IME 2002 (Kana Kanji Henkan for Windows XP) will appear.

To write Japanese, choose "Hiragana" in Nyuryoku (input) mode.

You can write Japanese as you like.

What you can do after Step 2

1. Create/view folders and files named Japanese

* But I recommend you to continue to use English only to name folders and files because of avoiding unexpected errors when you burn backup CD or exchange them with others.

2. Write/review Japanese documents with English applications

* Please check whether your English applications have Multi-lingual function before use them. For example Microsoft Office 2000/XP  are Multi-lingual applications. Especially Microsoft Word 2000/2002 have Japanese-dedicated features such as  "Furigana" "Kumimoji" "Tategaki"  "Greeting words wizard" and etc.  If you don't mind English interface of applications, you don't need Japanese Version any more.

3. Install/run Japanese applications

* No one supports this issue but actually some Japanese applications run on Windows XP English version. This picture shows HIDEMARU Editor v3.15, my favorite application, is running on English Windows XP Home Edition.
I would like to say "If your Japanese application supports Windows XP Japanese version officially, there is some possibility that yours  run on Windows XP English version." But please try at your own risk.
